Our local team is launching a collaborative process to update our association's constitution—aimed at making the Davenport NDP more transparent, more inclusive, and better equipped to support our members, candidates, and campaigns.
At our most recent executive meeting, we unanimously adopted a motion to begin work on proposed amendments to both our federal and provincial Davenport NDP constitutions. These changes will be considered at our Annual General Membership Meeting this fall—and we want your voice to help shape them this summer.
Why are we doing this? Over the past year, our association has learned a great deal about what works well in our constitution—and where we could improve clarity, transparency, and accessibility. This is about ensuring our governing rules reflect our values and support a healthy, open, and engaged riding association.
How can you get involved? All members of our riding association in good standing are invited to participate in the Constitution & Resolutions Committee, which will meet at least three times this summer and early fall.
The first meeting is:
When: Tuesday, June 24 at 7:00 PM
Where: Via Zoom (a link along with relevant documents will be emailed to you)
We’ll be reviewing key areas such as:
-
Opening executive meetings to observers
-
Defining new roles like Labour Liaison and Harassment Officers
-
Considering expectations around participation for riding association executive members, such as a minimum time commitment
-
Ensuring internal consistency with provincial and federal NDP constitutions
You don’t need to be an expert in governance—just someone who cares about building a strong, welcoming, and functional local party. This is a great way to make a meaningful contribution, learn how our association works, and shape how it operates going forward.
Final proposed amendments will be circulated to all members well in advance of the AGM. No changes will take effect unless they are approved by a two-thirds majority of members present and voting.
We hope you’ll consider getting involved. This is about strengthening our local democracy and continuing the work of making the NDP the party we all believe in.
